Album Rebranding - University Project

Brief: Redesign an album or EP cover of your choice as if the artist had decided to initiate a relaunch event. Design additional branding too.

Original Album cover

This is the original album cover. This album is ‘A New Place to Drown’ by Archy Marshall. This album includes some very experimental soundscapes which breach many genres, mainly psychedelic, breakbeat, hip hop, and jazz. My approach for this rebrand was to research the artist’s aesthetic, through Instagram, previous album covers, and youtube videos and there was also a book that he released alongside this album which was full of illustrations, poetry, and photography that documents his life. I used all these sources as inspiration, also listened to the album on repeat, and listened closely to the lyrics which invoked me to create mindmaps about the meanings of these lyrics and thought of ways I could visually communicate them. I also tried depicting the overall grainy and gloomy atmosphere that these tracks betray and including that into my outcome.

I decided to make a promotional Instagram post for the upcoming release of the album. For this, I contacted a local bar called Noah’s Yard, they change the name of their bar every day and you can ask them to change the sign for a message you wish to display. I chose some lyrics from the album that are well known amongst the fans. Connecting to the fans on a personal level who are already familiar with this album ahead of its relaunch.

The artwork that I used for the album cover was also selected for exhibition at The Glyn Vivian Art Gallery’s Swansea Open 2021.

I created this artwork using mix media processes.
